The Commune Social is the outcome of famed British chef Jason Atherton – ex-top deputy for Gordon Ramsay and Neri & Mu, the award winning Shanghai design firm. Headed by Scott Melvin and wife Kim Melvin they’ve brought a fresh and modern approach to Spanish tapas in a beautifully designed setting. The Commune Social has that “X-factor” you hope and expect of a restaurant with such thought and precision.

Brunch is available in the weekends opening at 12pm. The Commune Social follows a ‘No Reservation, No Surcharge Charge’ policy so expect to see a handful of diners waiting for it to open in anticipation for an outside table.

If you’re looking for a hangover cure, Rick Starr looks after the bar and mixes some of the best drinks in town. He will ensure you taste the best Bloody Mary’s available in Shanghai.

Without further ado, here’s my top 5 reasons to visit…

1. SHERRY CURED SALMON, BURNT CUCUMBER, CREAM CHEESE & CUCUMBER PANNACOTTA

The Commune Social

A light and playful dish. The combination of the pannacotta smeared on a mouthful of salmon is worth the visit alone. Not for sharing, you’ll want it all.

2. TAMARIND & CARROT SALAD, GOAT CHEESE, PINE NUTS & CRISPY QUINOA

The Commune Social

There is something perfect about the goat cheese at The Commune Social I always find myself ordering every dish it appears in.

3. POACHED EGG, CHORIZO, SMOKED BACON, PIQUILLO PEPPER, & BREAD

The Commune Social

A rich dish that is a dream for all meat lovers. Nothing better than some bread for dipping.

4. NEED AN EXCUSE TO EAT DESSERT?

The Commune Social

The Commune Social has a seriously creative dessert menu, including a dessert bar where you can perch up and watch them prepare your sweet treat in front of you. We went for the… caramel cake, roasted pineapple, and pink peppercorn ice cream.

5. AND YOU CAN’T FORGET THE LEMON MERINGUE WITH BASIL SORBET (!!)

The Commune Social

The basil sorbet is hiding inside the soft meringue shell. Light, sweet and has that sensational melt in yo’ mouth texture.

If this doesn’t make you drool and look forward to the weekend, I am not sure what will. Bon Appétit!
