WHO I AM
Hi! I’m Caitlyn. I’m 29 years old. I’m an American, originally from Oregon. I lived in San Francisco for the past six years before moving out to Shanghai in the fall of 2014!
WHAT I DO
I am a grade 1 teacher at an international school located in Puxi. When I’m not teaching, I’m playing Gaelic Football (Go Shanghai Sirens!) or scootin’ around the city on my scooter, Lola. I am huge fan of exploring around different neighborhoods with my camera and capturing life in Shanghai from a different perspective!
WHERE I LIVE
Ironically, I live in a lane house located in the former French Concession! I moved this summer, and I love having more of a local flavor in my neighborhood than my previous place. My neighbors are very patient with my limited Mandarin skills, though that doesn’t stop some of them trying to tell me all about how to properly say my lane address so the delivery men aren’t wandering around in search of my spot. One of my neighbors seems to find humor in my painful attempts to extract my scooter from the maze that is my lane, without knocking over buckets of brackish water, setting off bike alarms, or crashing into scaffolding. Ha, I’m probably about 1:5 times successful in avoiding those obstacles!
It’s a unique lifestyle for sure, that isn’t for everyone, but if you’re considering a place in a lane house, I’d recommend it!
Up until two years ago, I hadn’t even considered Shanghai as a place I would live and work. In early 2014, I attended a job fair in San Francisco, ready to take on a teaching position abroad, strongly considering my options in Europe. But as life can send you curveballs, I ended up accepting a job in Shanghai instead!
I couldn’t be happier with my decision and so glad I took a leap into unknown territory (for me at least). I’ve made a great group of friends and a sense of community. I have learned an incredible amount about the different cultures that call Shanghai home, not just from our host country and city. I enjoyed my first year and half so much that I ended up signing on for a third year of teaching!
I look forward to the next adventures and experiences I can gain from my time here!
