WHO I AM
Hi, my name is Hindrike Bammann! I’m 29 years old and from the north of Germany. I’ve been living in Shanghai since the Year of the Rabbit.
WHAT I DO
If somebody asks me this in a bar, I usually answer: “I’m a brain scientist.” As strange as this sounds, this is actually a relatively precise description. I am currently doing my PhD in computational Biology. My thesis will be about evolution, development and ageing of the primate brain. In particular, I am interested in features that are unique to humans. So, yeah: brain scientist!
WHERE I LIVE
I live in a wonderfully busy compound near Xujiahui and just across the street from the former french concession. My apartment is first floor and even has a patio which is great in the summer. When I leave for work in the morning, all the elderly folks are already sitting in front of that little hole-in-the-wall shop having a lively chat. Wish I could speak Shanghainese!
Shanghai chose me. I was offered a six-month internship and I came here on short notice without being prepared at all. I can say Shanghai was a shock for me in the beginning. But strangely, after some time, I fell in love with the city. Made friends with interesting people from all over the world and really started to feel at home in the ‘Hai. I’m here for more than fours years now and Shanghai still keeps surprising me every day. It definitely never gets boring here!
